Doctor Who And The Evil Of Cancer

Happy Birthday, Doctor Who.

Firday 23rd November was Doctor Who’s 49th birthday. Perhaps not one of the most auspicious birthdays, probably more generally regarded as just ‘the one before the 50th’. But maybe a chance to reflect before next year’s big celebrations.

Sadly, this year I’m given pause to reflect on the loss of both Caroline John and Mary Tamm, two lovely and gifted actresses who were an important part of the show’’s history and therefore, by extension, my world. And only the year before, we had to say tearful goodbye to Elisabeth Sladen whose Sarah Jane Smith was as much a companion to my childhood years as she was to the Doctor.

Time will, of course, catch up with us all in the end. But cancer catches far too many. As far back – and as recently – as May 2006, I lost my mum to it.

So you’d think this would be about her. There might be only six degrees of separation between Kevin Bacon and the rest of the world, but it seems we’re all liable at some point to feel the impact of cancer more directly. But I find it easier, on a public platform, to place myself at one stage removed, as it were, create a little distance. And ideally I didn’t want to make this about self.

In fact, just the opposite. For a while at least I wanted to take the self out of self-publishing. Do something. I’ve wanted to do something for a while, but couldn’t think what I could do that might make any difference.

It’s not much and it will probably only amount to a token something, but here it is, for all it’s worth:

In memory of Lis Sladen, Caroline John and Mary Tamm then (and yeah, it's a bit about my mum too), for the next 6 months (until May 24th 2013) all royalties from the first two Evil UnLtd books (in all formats) will be going to Cancer Research UK.

The gang over at Evil UnLtd will almost certainly disapprove. You can find out their reaction to the news here, along with links to the various ways you can get your hands, virtual or otherwise, on the paperbacks and/or ebooks. But I’ll include the links here for your convenience:
